Check engine light with codes 30BB and/or 30BA
The key fingerprint — these are DME-internal fault codes, not injector codes.
Violent misfire on 3 consecutive cylinders
Cylinders 1-2-3 or 4-5-6 all misfiring at once is almost never injector-side.
Already replaced plugs, coils, or injectors
And the fault came back immediately or never went away.

When It's the ECU, Not the Injectors
Run through this checklist. If most of these match your situation, you almost certainly have an MSD80 internal failure.
Fault codes are 30BB and/or 30BA specifically
These are DME output stage codes — not injector codes like 2AAF or 2AB0.
Multiple cylinders in the same bank are affected
Real injector failures are random. Bank-wide failure (3 in a row) points to the ECU driver circuit.
Fault returns immediately after clearing
A transistor failure is permanent hardware — clearing codes changes nothing.
Replacing injectors did not resolve the misfire
The injectors are fine. The ECU isn't driving them.
Misfire follows a single injector when you swap cylinders
If swapping injector 2 and injector 5 moves the misfire to cylinder 5, the injector is bad, not the ECU.
Fault codes are specific to one injector (e.g. 2AAF)
2AAF/2AB0/etc. are injector-side circuit codes. Different failure mode, different fix.
What's Actually Happening Inside Your MSD80
This isn't generic repair shop talk. Here's exactly what fails, why, and what fixing it actually means.
The MSD80 is the brain
The Siemens/VDO MSD80 DME (Digital Motor Electronics) manages every aspect of the N54 engine — fuel injection timing, ignition, turbo boost, and more. It uses dedicated MOSFET transistors as low-side switches to physically open and close each fuel injector.
The transistors fail
The original IRF644 MOSFETs are rated for only 250V — but voltage spikes during injector cutoff routinely exceed that. They have no built-in overvoltage protection. Years of thermal cycling push them past their limits, and when one fails (short between drain and source), the ECU detects it immediately.
The DME kills the bank
The MSD80 groups injectors into two banks of three. Bank 1 = cylinders 1-2-3 (code 30BB). Bank 2 = cylinders 4-5-6 (code 30BA). When one transistor in a bank fails, the ECU shuts off the entire bank to prevent engine damage. Result: 3 dead cylinders, violent misfires, and the car barely driveable.
Why replacing injectors/coils/plugs doesn't work
The injectors themselves are fine. The coils are fine. The MSD80 simply isn't sending the electrical signal to fire them — because the output transistor is dead. It's like blaming your lightbulbs when the light switch is broken. The injectors are powerless without a working driver stage in the DME. 30BB and 30BA are internal ECU fault codes, not injector fault codes.

The original ignition coil driver IGBTs operate right at their voltage ceiling with no self-protection. Thermal cascading from one failure accelerates the next.

We upgrade to IGBT drivers with integrated overvoltage clamping — the component protects itself instead of failing silently. Better specs than what's in the MSD81.
